Companion Urns

The passing of a loved one is a very difficult time for family and close friends and many important decisions have to be made at this time. More and more people are requesting their departed be cremated with their ashes being placed in Companion Urns.

In the past, couples were often buried in adjoining plots or the same one reopened to allow the other to be buried with their partner. Similarly, children were often buried with parents or other siblings. In our changing society, not only is cremation becoming more popular, but many families do not like the idea of moving from an area where loved ones are buried. Having an urn such as these means you can move your loved ones with you.

These urns come in all shapes and sizes and can be used as a keepsake to take home, placed in a crematorium, garden or in a vault. Companion urns can be either a single large urn that holds the ashes of two people in one container, or an urn with two parts side by side. There are urns made of different materials and come in varying designs.

Marble urns are beautifully crafted and are available in a variety of colors and can be designed as either one compartment or a divided urn. Pewter and bronze urns come in traditional styles as well as more modern designs, or depicting a couple or scene etc. Wooden cremation urns can be purchased in walnut or oak in a number of finishes. These urns usually open from the bottom via a screw on panel and have two separate compartments. It is wise that these urns are either placed in a vault or kept in the home away from moisture to preserve the wooden exterior.

Other popular styles of urn include a Cloisonne urn, which is handcrafted using copper or brass and colored enamel, typically depicting doves or flowers etc. Cloisonne art was perfected by the Chinese, but originated in France and is indeed a highly skilled process. These urns open from the top and hold the ashes of two people in one compartment. Urns fashioned as books or bibles, square urns with a crucifix or angels or other religious icons, those depicting ships, cars, etc are all available on request. As are Egyptian style companion urns, urns with a clock feature, even urns with a photo of the departed persons.

Urns made of metal can be engraved with names, relevant dates etc., whilst marble or wood urns come with a plate attached. Verses, epitaphs, or prayers can also be attached via engraving or plate.

Companion Urns are an ideal way of ensuring that our departed loved ones stay together even in death, thus giving great comfort to those left behind.
